What can be more special than celebrating your little ones first birthday. They’re first party and sharing precious first memories. But for most, it’s also an emotional time too. The ‘this time last year’ and remembering how small they were. And the difference to the strong willed and fiercely independent baby- now definitely more than a handful... even more of a reason to celebrate in style, and create the most incredible memories.
I thought long and hard about what to get both my littles for their first birthday. Something special that will last. Something for their memory box. And these were my top go to's:
A birthday letter book. Every year to write a letter to them. About their year. About what they’ve been up to, and about how they grow. A small thing that started in lockdown has now become a tradition for both babies - the night before their birthday, I sit and reflect on them. A special gift to gift them when they are 18 or 21- and I love that they are none the wiser.
Jewellery. A special necklace, or a charm bracelet to add to over the years. Something sentimental or meaningful- a birth stone, or precious diamond, maybe their initial. I was lucky enough to have this as a gift for my 18th and I love that I can provide the same for my littles.
Family portraits. Ok, you knew I would say that!! But it’s true. As much as I am passionate about capturing your littles as they grow, my passion stems from my own childhood, where family albums were often flicked through, were special memories captured and I can’t help but love sharing that with my own family. I even remember the handmade covers my mum had seen and the sticky album covers holding all the portraits in place. As a parent myself now. These are priceless. And Yes, we regularly have our own family photoshoots, where I am in the pictures too. Whether it’s a birthday session, or family session, it’s a chance for sibling, parent and family portraits, you will never regret a photoshoot capturing your loved ones.
It’s too easy to let birthdays slide and not appreciate you too Mama. Know that birthdays are also about you. Another year of smashing motherhood. Another year of nurturing and loving your little one. Another year of smashing being you! This is your time too. And know, that however you choose to celebrate these milestones, please remember that as much as your littles are your world, you are theirs too.
